A wonderful review. I read this book a...Cullen ... A wonderful review. I read this book a year or so ago and rate it in my top ten favorite noirs. Hallas manages to achieve what many of his fellow British writers, like James Hadley Chase, couldn't pull off when writing American fiction --- he wrote proper American vernacular. The story is fast paced and at times quirky, but it is the atmosphere and tone of the book that remains with me after closing the cover for the last time. I wish he'd written more in this style, but perhaps he'd said all he needed and wanted to say with this book. A great read.
